Coconut Coir Blocks

Erosion Control Blocks

Erosion Control Blocks are an easy and cost-effective solution for bank stabilization, shoreline erosion control blocksrestoration and slope reinforcement. Made entirely from biodegradable materials, these blocks work to stabilize a location until vegetation is able to take root. Blocks can be used on their own or as part of soil lifts to create layers of stabilization and control.

Each rectangular block is covered on three (3) sides with woven bristle coir fabric. The remaining side is left open and can be filled with dirt or other supporting materials. Similar to trenching of the coir logs, this creates a stable and cohesive structure around each block.

BioD Blocks and Soil Lifts

coir soil liftsStandard design for the BioD blocks can be found on the image to right. Each section will include the interior block, top, bottom and side fabric. One side will remain open for backfilling with soil and vegetation. For increased support, multiple coir blocks are often connected together to form a long block system. Blocks are connected by matching the male side of one block to the female side of another blocks. Each block is then placed together under fabric to provide a strong erosion control structure.

Erosion Control Block Installation

  1. Clear the installation location. Areas should be reinforced, clear of objects and level. If needed, rocks can be placed at the foundation to added support. At least two inches (2") of soil should be placed on top of this.

  2. Place the block. As seen above, every block system has an open end. Blocks should be placed so that the closed side is facing the edge.

  3. Lay out and anchor the bottom fabric. The fabric should be anchored with metal staples or wooden pegs.

  4. Fill soil into the area. Soil should be placed so that it is at least as high as the block.

  5. Cover the compacted soil with the top fabric layer and anchor it to the ground.

Joining Multiple Erosion Control Block Systems

  1. Each block has a male and female end. The female end will have added fabric for connection of multiple blocks.

  2. To connect multiple blocks, place the female fabric over top of the male end. Blocks should then sit adjacent to each other.

  3. Place the stakes on the overlapping fabric.
